About the 2026 panelists
- Sarika Mehta was born to a Gujarati family and raised in Chicago's suburbia. She currently makes mischief in Portland, OR. Although she spent a career in bilingual (Spanish) education, her fascination with languages led her to Sign Language Interpreting and journalism for the ears. The intersection of language and disability justice is her jam. She works toward a future in which accessibility is the default, rather than a request involving bureaucracy.
Iryna Iudina is a certified court and medical interpreter and professional translator specializing in Russian–English and Ukrainian–English language pairs. She holds a Master’s degree in languages and a Certificate in Canadian Immigration Law, and is certified as a Court Interpreter by the Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC), as well as a Certified Medical Interpreter (NBCMI). Her professional practice spans legal, immigration, government, and healthcare contexts across Canada and the United States, including work with law enforcement agencies and in immigration detention settings. In addition to her professional work, she serves as a volunteer standardized patient with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, contributing to medical education and the development of clinical and intercultural communication skills. Her work is characterized by linguistic precision, ethical rigor, and a strong commitment to accuracy in high-stakes institutional environments.
- Allison deFreese (the panel moderator) is president of the Oregon Society of Translators and Interpreters, has been leading multi-language literary translation workshops for OSTI since 2018, and has served as OSTI's conference chair since 2020. She has published a few books and translations.
