Come practice sight translating common documents such as HIPAA releases and consent forms.  Participants will give and receive feedback in this supportive environment as we practice this useful skill and learn from each other.

Presenter Bios (alphabetical order by last name)

Khanh Le is an immigrant from Vietnam, now a naturalized U.S. citizen. As a Youth & Family Advocate and Vietnamese liaison, she helps her community with language interpretation and resource connections. Passionate about promoting equity and inclusion, she focuses on language interpretation, translation, and second language acquisition to empower her community and make a positive impact in her adopted homeland.

Victor Shepherd

• Certified Health Care / Community Interpreter Spanish/English (Certified medical interpreter through CCHI.)
• Has lived in 4 countries and territories and considering where to live next. (Curious to know? Just ask).
• Interested in how adults learn languages and currently is studying Korean.
• Dedicates a significant amount of time playing with technology and helps others troubleshoot their problems.

Amanda Wheeler-Kay is a Certified Health Care / Community Interpreter in Spanish/English who has interpreted in the Portland area since 2007 (certification through NBCMI.) Amanda previously worked as a bilingual social worker, and that experience informs her work as an interpreter and as an educator. She prefers to work in collaboration with other language equity advocates in creating and teaching workshops. She currently lives in Oregon, her home state, but has formerly considered Washington DC and Buena Vista, El Salvador as home. She loves to travel with friends and family and play noncompetitive soccer.

Course Description:

If you would like to improve your sight translation, this class is for you! Come practice sight translating common documents such as HIPAA releases and consent forms. Participants will give and receive feedback in this supportive environment as we practice and learn from each other.

Students will:

• learn basic concepts and techniques of sight translation, including identifying units of meaning, dealing with unfamiliar words, self-correction, and avoiding verbal literal translations.
• assess their own abilities to comprehend written text in one language and produce an oral or signed rendition in another language.
• develop or improve sight translating skills through practice and giving/receiving feedback from peers.

Educational Objectives:

• Identify specific skills necessary for sight translation.
• Exemplify reflective practice in assessing the quality of one’s own sight translation through observation, application, analysis, and supervision.
• Exhibit improved competence in sight translation.
