Oregon Court Interpreter Cafe, Hosted by OSTI
w/ Special Guest Chantal Portillo, PhD
Chantal will be speaking to us about how the OJD team she works with approached the COVID-19 public health crisis and their efforts to get remote interpretation going in the courts. Then, we will hear about Chantal’s preparation for in person court assignments during the pandemic. She will be available to answer questions.
(Note: This event is open to Oregon Certified and Registered Court Interpreters, OSTI Membership not required.)
Why: To socialize and check-in with our colleagues; to learn from each other and share our common experiences interpreting for the Oregon Courts during pandemic times; and—very importantly—to cut loose and socialize a little! These get-togethers will not be recorded, and are meant to foment solidarity amongst our colleagues when dealing with the various in-person, remote, and hybrid modalities of court interpreting. We can also chat about any issues that impact us in all aspects of court life. This is an ongoing event with varying hosts, an array of "set" and "loose" agendas, and guest speakers. Join us!
Special Guest Bio: Chantal was born in the USA and raised in Spain, which provided her with a bi-cultural family background from a young age. This sparked her interest in languages and interculturality, which lead to a bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpretation first, and a master’s and PhD in fields related to intangible heritage, sustainable tourism and intercultural interpretation and translation in the creation of sustainable cultural tourism products. Chantal was a conference interpreter in Spain for 10 years as well as being certified by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a judicial translator and interpreter since 2004. After moving to the USA and working as a certified medical interpreter for a year, Chantal got certified as judicial interpreter with the OJD and started working in 2015 as independent contractor for agencies and the courts. In 2020, and after 23 years of being an independent contractor, Chantal was hired by the OJD as staff interpreter at the Marion County Circuit Court, her current placement. In 2020 she also obtained the ATA certification EN to SP and got judicially certified in CA and NM. In her free time, Chantal loves hiking, doing yoga and acro-yoga, and crafting.
