Interpreting for Victims of Domestic Violence: Domestic Violence and Family Conflicts (Spanish Terminology)

This presentation will cover trauma-informed strategies for working with those who have experienced domestic violence and also introduce key vocabulary (in Spanish and in English) for interpreters and translators in medical, court, or educational settings. We will examine trauma-informed approaches to serving clients who have experienced violence, explore cultural considerations in language access provider/patient interactions, and build a glossary of core terminology.

En esta presentación conversaremos sobre:

1) Qué es la violencia doméstica

2) La diferencia entre violencia doméstica y conflictos familiares

3) Cómo la violencia doméstica y conflictos familiares generan trauma (y cómo se manifiesta este trauma en las relaciones/interacciones cotidianas)

4) Consideraciones culturales cuando trabajamos con las personas que han sido afectadas por este problema.

5) Consideraciones culturales en el servicio a las personas afectadas por VD y CF

Topic: Domestic Violence and Family Conflicts

In this presentation, we will discuss:

1. What domestic violence is

2. The Difference Between Domestic Violence and Family Conflict

3. How domestic violence and family conflict create trauma (and how this trauma manifests itself in everyday relationships/interactions)

4. Cultural considerations when working with people who have been affected by this issue.

5. Cultural considerations in serving people affected by DV and FC.

About the presenter

Leocadia Montero-Hainley is an Afro-Latina woman who helps people use a trauma-informed approach to address conflicts. She facilitates dialogues on the subjects of forgiveness, reconciliation, and restorative justice. Leocadia works with organizations, government agencies, and families, helping them navigate compassionate conversations when addressing difficult relationships. She is a psychotherapist, trained in the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Model from Pacific University, where she earned her Master of Arts. She is the principal of Leocadia Consulting and an Associate with LACE Oregon. Leocadia is from the Dominican Republic, where she earned a law degree and served as a prosecutor. Leocadia is a published author and enjoys spending time with her husband and their three boys.

Ethical Conundrums in Medical Interpreting

Handle ethical dilemmas with clarity and confidence while staying within your professional role

Presented by Eliana Lobo

Many, if not most, of the ethical mistakes made by interpreters tends to come from a place of trying to be helpful, polite, or supportive. But the unintended consequence may be an ethical violation. Understanding role boundaries clearly can help interpreters navigate the waters of customer service in a way that consistently upholds the Code of Ethics.

This webinar will explore all of the above. Scripts will be shared for positive, professional interaction, and breakout room sessions will offer the opportunity for attendees to practice

Handouts: We will have a Venn diagram activity for attendees to compare the codes of ethics and then report back on ethics held in common. Please print them prior to the workshop or have them ready on another device.

About the presenter:

Eliana Lobo is a Certified Medical Interpreter and Trainer of Trainers, with M.A.s from Brown University in Bilingual Education, and Portuguese & Brazilian Studies. Beginning as a Spanish/Portuguese medical interpreter at Rhode Island Hospital, then becoming Trainer & Supervisor for Harborview Medical Center’s Department of Interpreter Services in Seattle, followed by National Director of Interpreter Quality for In Demand, and currently Director of Lobo Language Access in Tacoma Washington, Eliana provides consultation on language access plans, interpreter training curricula, and diversity & inclusion issues. Eliana is a regular speaker at healthcare interpreter conferences, presenter/co- host for NCIHC’s “Home for Trainers” webinar series, Board member and Chair of the Standards & Training Committee at NCIHC, and a former CCHI Commissioner.
