Event: American Copy Editors Society conference in Portland

This conference may be helpful for those seeking to enhance their English writing and editing skills. Click here for a list of sessions. Helen Eby, OSTI President, will speak on Translation as Teamwork.

Registration discount – ACES is setting up a code that will grant ATA/OSTI members a 10% discount on ACES conference registration. ATA and OSTI members should use the code “OSTIATA10” when registering online. The early-bird deadline is Jan. 31, so sign up soon to save more money!

OSTI and ATA are going to this conference to represent translators because copyeditors naturally work with translators on a regular basis. We want them to meet us. We will be requesting CE credits from the ATA for this conference as well. Check this site for updated information on that!

This is how the information appears in the conference program guide (see the link above).

Translation as Teamwork

Why are people frustrated with the translations they read? Many translations are conducted in a very literal way — taking a text from one language to another. For a translation to be effective, the team needs to answer some questions: Who will read this document in Language X? Why are we translating it? What adjustments can we make? The ASTM Standard Guide for Quality Assurance in Translation provides a framework for the team (the person who requests the translation, the translator and the reviewer) to work through these issues.

Speaker: Helen Eby

Session Particulars
Day: Saturday, April 2
Time: 9-10 a.m.

Of course, we hope our members attend the many other sessions at the conference! Spending a day at the Boot Camp that ACES had in Portland sharpened my skills significantly and helped me work much better with my colleagues as I interact with them to improve the text on a website. Even if you are translating into a non-English language, knowing how to discuss these issues in English and knowing what to look for will strengthen your teamwork with your clients and will give you a sharper eye as you clean up your own translations in your non-English language.

OSTI, NOTIS and the ATA will share a booth at the ACES conference.
