OHA invitation to session on translation and interpretation requirements

The Oregon Health Authority released the following letter on August 4. This letter is reposted here with the approval of the OHA.

“Translation and Interpreting Services Requirements for Clients with Limited English Proficiency”
Presentation and Q&A Opportunity

Please join the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) and the Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) for a presentation and Q&A session on the MEMO that was released on Limited English Proficiency Translation and Interpretation Requirements in Oregon. Two presentations will be offered (see below for more details).

Objectives:
• Provide a concise and comprehensive overview of the requirements of Title VI and other state and federal laws governing translation and interpretation
• Provide guidance on the use of Qualified and Certified Healthcare Interpreters
• Identify best practices to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and consequences of non-compliance

Target Audience:
Clinical Providers, Licensing Boards, Provider Associations (Pharmacy, Dental, Medical, etc.), Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs), CEOs and Administrators, Public Health Administrators, Health Plans, Policy and Program Managers, Consumers, Oregon Health Authority Staff.

About the Presenter:
Deanna Laidler obtained a BA in Sociology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and both a Juris Doctor and a Masters of Legal Letters in Health Law from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Deanna has practiced health law for over 20 years in a variety of settings, including private practice and as in-house counsel for payers, providers, malpractice carriers, and county and state agencies. Deanna is currently a Senior Assistant Attorney General with the Oregon Department of Justice where her primary responsibilities include HIPAA, health information technology, Coordinated Care Organizations, contracting, and regulatory compliance.
